The Gorgeous Brinjal/Aubergine

This is my first attempt to grow brinjal. It is really satisfying when you see little gorgeous purple color fruits hanging around the plants.

Growing your own brinjal make me feel safer to eat them.

I remember my mother always ask me to peel off the skin of the store-bought brinjal. She said it got too much pesticide on it. Not good for us!

Basically, I feel brinjal is quite easy to grow. Not much bugs & inserts are attracted to them. And I do not need to wrap them like cucumber & bitter gourd (fruit flies!!!). No manual pollination is needed too.

So give it a try. Brinjal plant can last for quite a long time. I have give away the brinjal 3 times.

Let's enjoy the brinjal show!

Giant Cucumber in the house

OMG! I have planted a giant cucumber in my mini garden.....I really don’t realize it until I look back at the picture of baby cucumber. Baby cucumber yang tengah bloom had actually shown us her potential....It was larger compare with other baby cucumbers.

I am only using the normal store-bought cucumber seeds. Among all cucumber plants that I grew, only one of them gave me a super big cucumber.

This ‘special’ cucumber plant alone had given me 7 giant cucumbers!!! I think it will be more if I didn’t keep the 7th cucumber as a seed.

The appearance of these giant cucumbers looks slightly different compare with the normal cucumber. They were yellowish which make them look slightly not so attractive.

But once u cut them, they were perfect. Although these cucumbers are so big in size, but they are still very young. The middle part (seeds) of the cucumber has not even developed yet. I believe they can still grow bigger.

The 1st cucumber that I harvested was slightly small compared others. Because it was 1st one, and I am really do not sure whether it was big enough for me to pick it. So after picking the 1st one, i had learned to pick them at their time.

Oh ya, I had failed to keep the seeds from the 7th cucumber. It has a lot of seeds inside but they were sterile. I think maybe the cucumber plant was a hybrid variety. Sign....

But never mind, the old cucumber still can be eaten. It look exactly the same with timun tun although it is not!

Well, now come the time for contest.....Guess the weights of the green and the brown color cucumbers...

I will select the winner based on the closest answer....
Due date: 1.2.2013
Prize: Home breed seeds

Carrot

See, this is what I got after spending 6 months in growing these little poor carrots. Ya, I am quite disappointed but it was really fun as this is the 1st time I had tried to grow carrot. Sis Ummuaidan, I really need your guidance for this…:p

BTW, the carrot leaves are really smell very good. Is it edible?

Pumpkins in the house!

Hurray!! Finally my pumpkin plants bear me fruits. There are total 3 baby pumpkins now. One of them are round while the other two shaped like a bottle.

Both the male and female flowers of pumpkin have no chance to bloom as they were terribly attacked by fruit flies. They dropped before they have chance to bloom.

I tried to wrap some of the flowers with plastic bag, hoping that some of them may survive.

I really need to try my luck. The pumpkin plants look so fertile but no fruit. How sad.

So, I come out with an idea to store the successfully bloomed male flower in the fridge. Luckily I had a female pumpkin flower that will be bloomed in 2-3 days I guess.

U know, this really work! The male flower still looks fresh after 3 days kept in the fridge. Of course, I do not want to miss the chance & I hand pollinate them…hehe

Finally I manage to “produce” 3 baby pumpkins. Ehem…
