Mustard cabbage/sayur pahit/kai choy

My sayur pahit/mustard cabbage/kai choy has grown up. It is called sayur pahit because it has a bitter taste in it. Should i harvest it already?

My mother used to cook this kai choy into soup by adding in anchovies and fish ball. I like to eat my rice just with the soup (the typical chinese eating style-must has soup). hahah. U can taste the sweetness of the anchovies & the taste of kai choy.

I remember at one time I fall sick and I have no appetite to eat any foods! But I did eat a bit of rice with this soup, weird right?

Chinese restaurant usually cook the thick stem of kai choy with seafood (crab meat, sotong, prawn & scallop) in thick-egg-gravy.  Sedap!

Lady's Finger/Okra

Yeah! Finally my okra are big enough for me to harvest! i have about 12 okra now in the fridge. Enough for us ^_^

This time the okra plants give me fruit a bit late. Maybe I grow them too close to the roselle plants. Make them have not enough sun light.

Anyway, the okra still turn out. So no complain. Hopefully many more okra to come.

i like to stir fry the okra or just steam it & eat with budu-cili padi-garlic-lime juice. Sometimes i just put them in curry or asam pedas. So nice to eat!!

Just received my new okra seeds (bendi emas)from En.Is. hehe. According to him, this type of okra will give more fruit than the other type of okra. Must try later.

Uninvited Guests on my dwarf pak choy

My poor dwarf pak choy are full of holes and green droppings recently. I check through the leaves and notice that there are a lot of uninvited guests, happily enjoying themselves for this pesticide free pak choy.
These worms are either in light brown or light green in color. I just hate them. My pak choy grew so beautiful before invaded by these creatures!!!
These little creatures really cause a lot of damage on my pak choy. I hand-pick and destroy the worms every single day but I still can see them everyday! Their grow rate was so fast!
I do not like to harvest green vegetable that have not fully reach their mature stage. I feel it is a waste, as the green vegetable may grow bigger in little short time.

But at last, I decide to harvest the pak choy. I had inspected the pak choy for worms every single day in 2 weeks time, but it did not turn well. I better harvest it before the worms finish them for me.

The journey of my long bean

Last month, i had planted one long bean plant, yes, only one. It grew so well and the leaves were so big.

It was just before raya, and it start flowering. A lot of black ants surrounded the flower. I did not have a chance to see the long bean yet as the flower & baby bean keep dropping!!

At the same time, the holiday for raya started & I went back to my hometown for about a week of time.

I am quite worry as nobody will be there to help me to water my long bean. It was a crucial time as the plant almost bear me long bean & the plant need water to grow!!

Thing happened as I expected when I come back from holiday. Whole long bean plant was dried up.

The plant did bear me 11 long beans, yes 11 long beans. But all were in abnormal shape and retarded

What a experience…no choice and I keep watering the plant hoping the bean will be revived back.

But all effort were useless!!!! Arrhhhhhhh!!!

Still, i had the luck to taste the long bean at last but all were in mini size as the whole plant was dried up eventually.

Multilayer Bunga Telang/Blue Pea Flower

i managed to see a multilayer blue pea flower or bunga telang last week. I know there is a multilayer blue pea flower but i have never seen before.

i only have planted the single layer blue pea flower.

So happy! of course, i quickly checked through to see whether there was a dry pod or not. Ya, i am lucky. I managed to collect 2 pods for seeds collecting.

Peoples usually extract the natural blue color from this flower for kuih & nasi karabu

Look elegant right?

Kacang Parang/Sword Bean

My long awaited sword bean seed had germinated!! It took approximately 3 weeks of time to germinate.

i only have 2 sword bean seeds & this time i only planted one seed.

That red color of sword bean look so mysterious right?

Sword bean plant is growing taller & taller. It is ready for transplant. It needs a trellis support now. Hopefully it will successfully produce sword bean later on ^_^

From pumpkin seeds to pumpkin shoots

i bought a pumpkin from supermarket. As usual, i will compost the skin and throw away the pumpkin seeds into dustbin. Because i have no place to plant it. Pumpkin need quite a lot of space & time to grow.

But today, i kept the seeds. Of course, u can use this seeds to grow pumpkin. The seeds itself can be eaten as kuaci. U can fry them or roasted them in the oven.

i read from the internet that pumpkin shoots can be eaten. i myself had never try it. So, i purposely keep the seeds this time for pumpkin shoots producing.

i sowed the seeds in a polystyrene box. The seeds germinated within two days. Quite fast!

See....The shoots are ready for harvest! U can wait until the 1st tendril have turn out or U can harvest it as earlier as u want...

The harvest...Peoples usually cook pumpkin shoots with coconut milk. But i do not like my vege in coconut milk. So i just simply stir fried the shoots with oyster sauce & garlic. It taste good. Please take the young shoots only. As peoples on the net said matured leaves taste like sand paper.

Pumpkin shoots are hairy, u can removed the hairy layer if u want. i just simply peel off the hairy layer using my hand, by taking a little piece and peeling down toward the other end. A long piece of hairy layer should come off.  Go all around until all the hairy layer is removed.

It was worth a try.....as the shoots were tasty, pesticide free and easy to grow. After shoots harvesting, u can keep the plant for shoots producing again or u can remove the whole plant & re-sow the pumpkin seeds...since we have a lot of pumpkin seeds...

Please do keep the seeds next time if u ever buy pumpkin from the market...u can easily transform them into tasty + healthy green!

Bayam Hijau (Green Amaranthus)

This was my very 1st experiance on growing my own green amaranthus (bayam hijau). I got the free seeds from En. Iskandar. Thanks a lot! That was my 1st time reading his blog too. From that day onward, i keep track on his blog. Bacause i am very keen to grow my own food in my backyard or even in the container.

My green amaranthus grow up very fast. Maybe it was the raining season that help a lot beside the chicken manure pellets that i put in.
The green color was look so lovely right? Do u notice that there was a red bayam among the green...

The harvesting time.......The green amaranthus look so beautiful. i harvested the bayam 3 times. For the 1st harvest, i only picked those that already grew up and let the smaller one continue to grow.....

Now, let's see what happen after the bayam was left abandoned for one or two week as i balik kampung.......My bayam had been attacked by small green worm....yiyer...a lot of them! argh! BTW, i purposely kept the red bayam to produce me seeds later on....Ya, i do have the seeds now =)

Kailan

Harvested Kailan yesterday afternoon. Not much. But at least enough for me & Mr. Muscleman. i put it into noodles. i afraid the kailan will be too fibrous, luckily it was not. Still tender & tasty! I love kailan. The price of kailan is usually higher than other green veges in the market. But i hate the leaf miner.
Can u see the white tunnels made by leaf miners?
