Trust me...You can also grow ginseng!

It is really fun to grow ginseng jawa! You can really harvest the ginseng look alike root besides the leaves that we can eat as vegetable. So Amzaing!

Well, from the appearance, the roots look exactly the same as the ginseng that sell in the store. However, ginseng jawa root do not possess strong smell and taste  like those ginseng selling in the store. Plenty of research papers have reported on the benefit of ginseng jawa (try google ya).

However, to get the ginseng look alike root, you need to grow the plant from the seeds. 

If you are only interested with the leaves, then you may try to grow it from cuttings. Super easy to grow.

Sometimes i am too busy and tak sempat to harvest the leaves. Eventually the plants start to bloom and bear seeds. The mature seeds will pop out and from there you will have a lot of baby ginseng jawa plants that will surprise you with ginseng root at the end. Fun isn't it?

Tadaaaaaaaaaaa...there come the ginseng jawa roots! it really surprise me!! It is so fun to pull out a plant and u see the ginseng root immediatly after that.

These ginseng jawa plants actually shared the pots with my adenium plants that i seldom water them. I am reallly impress by the size of the root as the ginseng jawa plants are stil small relatively.

Even the baby plants also have ginseng look like root...omg! i am so happy!

Tadaaaaaaaaa.........after cleaning... i dried them 1st. Because i wanna see how much they will shrink ...

Forget to take a proper picture of ginseng jawa roots after drying. It took me more than a week to dry the root. I arranged the bigger roots into a nicer box and gave to my mom as CNY gift :-)..hehe...while the smaller and broken roots were kept inside the  plastic bag (unpresentable haha). i cooked a chicken soup with all of the above ingrediants....I just put in whatever i have in the fridge...The soup tasted good and sweet but there is No ginseng taste at all. If you are cooking this soup using the store bought ginseng, you already can smell ginseng everywhere around the house. Next time, i will cook the fresh root straight, save the time and trouble for drying...

Kacang panjang renek or dwarf long bean is the choice for you! Worth trying! 

Dwarf long bean plant start to bloom sooner than the normal type pf long bean. 

Hope this sharing will inspire and encourage you to grow your own food eventhough you are not staying in landed house. Everything is possible! =)

Harvest update March 2016

Halor March 2016!  Let's see what do i have from the garden recently...

How many type of plants can you see in the picture? There are 7 type at least! - kucing galak, sambung nyawa dwiwarna, bangun-bangun, kesum, jasmin, cili padi & taiwan goji berry palnts

(1) Green leaves harvest: kangkung, brazillian spianch & ginseng jawa  (2) As usual, peria katak, chili padi & the  cute new comer "timun tikus" that grow by itself

We have fat papayas, peria katak, blue pea flowers, mulberrym chili padi & spring onion =)

ALmost the same harvest as previous picture, except the poor red long bean

Hope you don get bored...almost the same harvest to show

Kucai Oh Kucai (Chive)

My mom planted around 10 kucai plants in one pot. All her kucai plants are so fat and they bloom non-stop!

Found one little baby of the kucai, the seed dropped and successfully germinated in the nearby pot

Gorgeous Mrs Garfield

I get to know the name of this gorgeous Hippeastrum as “Mrs Garfield” through Mr. Google. Thanks to him. 

'Mrs. Garfield'? ?  The name is really weird! The flower definitely does not look like the Garfield cat at all right?

Hippeastrum 'Mrs. Garfield' has been a favourite of mine, the bloom is so lovely. The soft white 6 petals flower looks like a star, and elegantly reticulated with pink veins.

Hippeastrum 'Mrs. Garfield' is easy to be recognised through it broad leaves centred with a white stripe down the middle of each leaf.

This type of hippeastrum is pretty common in Malaysia. Mr. Google said it has been existence in UK since 18th century. Wow!

I planted the bulb on July 2015 & it bloom 3 months later. So soon and I didn’t expect the bloom.  It really surprised me!

Multilayer Pink & Purple Balsam

I really like the multilayer balsam so much especially the pink color one. It look like small sweet roses to me. Furthermore, it has no thorn and very easy to grow and take care with. 

You have no place to grow them? Easy.....you can always grow them in pot just like me. They can still produce beautiful blooms for you to enjoy!

Asam Jawa@Tamarind & Cotton Tree

 

I am very lucky to have a lot of asam jawa@tamarind tress near my work place. 

We can hand picked the fresh asam jawa that dropped on the ground almost everyday when the asam jawa fruits is ripen.

 

We eat them fresh just like that so that we do not get bored with our work. Yes, it is very sour!!  I also freeze some for cooking later on.

 

Sometimes the asam jawa pods get moldy especially on the raining day.

 

Some of the asam jawa's seeds germinated into new life!!

 

A lot of baby plants of asam jawa can be seem near the big asam jawa tree.

 

Besides asam jawa tree, we have a cotton tree near by.

The scenery is simply amazing when a lot of cotton  pods have burst. Look like it is snowing!
